Reach Address Database (RAD) Download

To download Water Program data from the Reach Address Database (RAD), specify your Area of Interest and desired Water Program Features on the form below, then click on the Submit button.

The RAD contains the spatial representation for each Water Program Feature and an associated identifier (also, known as the Entity ID) used to relate the spatial representation to descriptive attributes stored in a separate Water Program database. For example, the Assessed Waters Feature identifier can be used to access attribute information stored in the National Assessment Database. The RAD data downloaded from this page are delivered in zipped exit EPA (compressed), shapefile exit EPA format. Links to metadata (PDF and XML formats) for each set of Water Program Features in the RAD are also provided.

In order to keep download file sizes manageable, the following limits apply:

Area of Interest Number Per Retrieval Number of Water Programs
State 1 1
Watershed 10 1 or more

Special requests for national extractions of RAD data can be submitted through the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page.

Area of Interest (Choose one)

exit EPA
Then select up to 10 Cataloging Units within that Hydrologic Region
To select multiple Cataloging Units from the scrolling list above,
use standard Windows Shift-Click and Ctrl-Click commands.

When the resulting Zip file is ready for download (this may take a few minutes after clicking Submit), a new window containing a link to the file will be displayed.

Please note, due to a flaw in the ArcIMS product (reference #NIM039848), the extracted RAD records with date fields containing a NULL values store a sequence of control characters in that record in the shapefile. These control characters may be troublesome to GIS clients seeking to use the shapefiles. To work around this problem, the RAD Download services have been altered to assign a "fictitious" date value of 02/29/1904 to any date which normally is empty. Fields affected are EVENTDATE, REACHSMDATE, END_DATE and START_DATE. Please consider any instances of the date 02/29/1904 to be equal to NULL.
